The heartwood is a deep, dull reddish-brown with even darker, distinct growth ring figuring. It is a very straight, tightly grained wood with textures that can range from very silky and fine to somewhat coarse. Redwood, also known as sequoia, is a truly beautiful wood and is an excellent application for either interior or exterior projects. An ancient tree dating back to the Jurassic Period, the sequoia (or redwood) tree is the largest organism in the world, capable of reaching heights of up to 350 feet and reaching diameters exceeding 20 feet in some specimens. There are also some specimens that are dated 2,000 years old and a ripe age of 600 years is not uncommon. One fallen tree would produce thousands of board feet of lumber, making it a very attractive prospect for logging. The massive size, as well as redwoods excellent rot resistance, pest resistance and durability made it a highly utilized lumber that was quickly decimated. The remaining old growth redwoods that remain are protected and near impossible to obtain for new lumber. It is only through reclaiming that we are able to offer this wood.
